If you want to make the exterior of your home look great there are many things you can do. One of these things is cleaning your roof. Even though you may not look up at your roof often people driving or walking by your home can see the roof easily. Fortunately, you can make your roof look beautiful by following the two tips below.

Remove Debris

The first thing you need to do is to remove all debris that is on the roof. You may find things like small branches and built up leaves. If you do this yourself, you need to wear shoes that have non-slip soles, so you will not slip while on the roof. Get a ladder that is tall enough for you to get on the roof. Ask a friend to be there with you and to hold the ladder so you do not fall.

Pick up the small sticks and throw them over the roof. You can use a broom to sweep off the leaves. If you have a leaf blower you can use this with an extension pole to remove the leaves. This way you would not have to climb up on the roof. This will work great if there are a lot of leaves on the roof. Leaves are bad on the roof because they will soak up rain. The water will then sit directly on the shingles, which can cause the shingles to deteriorate over time.

While you are cleaning the roof remove any leaves and other debris that may be built up in the gutters. This is very important because if water gets backed up in the gutter the water will then go under the roof and then water will leak into your attic.

Clean the Roof

Once the debris is off the roof you need to check it for algae build up. This is especially true if you live in a climate that has humid, warm summers. Algae do not damage your roof in any way, but it does make your roof look bad.

Algae is a blue/green color. If you see this, you can mix up a bucket of half bleach and half water. Do not use a pressure washer as this may damage your roof. Instead, use an extension brush or climb up on the roof and wipe the solution on the algae. This solution will kill the algae spores, as well as remove the blue/green color from the roof. When you are finished, rinse off the roof immediately to remove any left-over bleach.

If you have any type of vegetation near the roof, such as bushes or plants, wet them down with a hose as the water will protect them from any bleach residue.

Contact a roofing contractor if you do not feel comfortable cleaning your roof, as they can do this for you. While the contractor is there they can inspect your entire roof, and look for any type of damage. To learn more, visit a website like https://www.hometowneroofing.com/
